1. Open up a wall - Maybe open up two of them. Sure you've heard it before but if done the right way - it works wonders.

2. Lighten the color - Especially small kitchens. Lighten the wall, cabinetry and counter top colors. All or just one of them. Also, Paint the stained window trim a shiny white.

3. Dump the table - Add an island w/ seating and get rid of the table that you never use. It can significantly add space and make a dramatic difference.

4. Floor to ceiling cabinets - This adds volume, a lot cabinet space and the illusion of a larger space. Bump out the cabinet over the fridge to be even with the front of it too.

5. Remove some upper cabinets - Replace them with shelving, or just keep open and then add a small pantry by taking space from an adjacent room.

1. Nest

Change your air temp from your smartphone, while lying in bed! Too cold on winter mornings, no problem. Just turn it up and wait under the covers til it's warm enough. Programmable, learning and remotely controlled...and it looks cool.

2. Barn Doors

Turn an opening into a beautiful and functional room centerpiece. Add a little privacy when needed.  All shapes and sizes and easily retrofitted. Inside or even in the kids backyard playhouse. (You did build them a playhouse right?)

3. Keypad Entry Locks

No need for keys. Walking the kids and the dog and don't want to bring your keys, or want to let mom in to dog sit while you're out of town, no biggie. Love these things.

4. Remote Control Ceiling Fans

Ok so maybe not so custom looking but awesome when you can turn the fan off/on or down a little when you wake up in the middle of the night in need of an urgent temperature adjustment to get you right back to sleep. Ours has light dimming features too. We use ours just about every night. When I say we, I mean my wife.

5. Dimmers

I know I just mentioned this kinda but if you don't have all your living room, basement, TV room, bathroom and bedroom lights on dimmers - you are missing out! It's nice to be able to dim the lights while watching TV or when winding the kids down before bed. Also helps when not blinding yourself when you have to run to the bathroom in the middle of the night.

6. Soft Closers

I know I said 5 but what the heck. On your cabinetry doors and drawers and even on your toilet seat. Something you'll notice every day when your doors quietly and softly close. Feels so regal!
